Exercise keeps our bodies fit. But what about toning up our inner selves? Best-selling author Bernie S. Siegel has devised 101 Exercises for the Soul. “Our body and soul are intended to work together,” writes Siegel, a retired physician. “To accomplish this, we must respect our bodies and keep them in shape, and we must also understand, respect and care for that which lies within us.”
Siegel recommends starting with an exercise that resonates with your life right now. Among the 101 exercises:
Role playing: Think of a character you admire from a film or play. For one week, try to incorporate the strengths of the character into your actions.
Nature poem: Find a spot outdoors to watch and listen to the beauty around you and write about it to deepen your bond with nature.
Get your own crayons: Drawing an outdoor scene that includes a tree opens a window to self-insight.
Communicate with the divine: Send prayer blessings to the people who are driving you crazy as well as to your dearest ones.
Live in someone else’s shoes: Choose someone whose life is very different from yours and imagine how he or she must feel.
